7 Quick Takes Sunday

  • In case you didn't see it, there was a discussion on http://www.h-net.org/~quilt/ regarding Quilts and Proverbs. Right up my alley and I thought I'd share in case you didn't see it. Maybe you'd dig it, too.

  • Don't you love this block? Made by my friend Susan. The quilt she's working on is adorable and I'd love to share but I didn't ask. ...already in the dog house! I wanted to share as much as I thought I could get away with. It's delightful, isn't it?

  • Susan has offered to help me with the machine applique [and the fusible business] needed for the dern center. I know, I swore off that applique but I love this block so I have to learn. Dernit how I do myself in every time. What fabric will I use? I ask myself but no answer yet.

  • On Fabric. Faye teaches at the Olde Green Cupboard but she's much more than that. An appealing woman with years of skill, talent and a damn fine sense of reality. She's in my head all the time with this one: You wouldn't believe it but they're printing new fabric as we speak!

  • Duplicate names. Have you noticed how many Quilting Karen's there are or Quilting Kim's? Just my observation, running away with me but I wonder if you notice it or have some other names you notice?

  • The "Jack's Chain" that I made Friday is fun but it's not calling to me so I'm puttin' the lock on that one for now. Watch, the Chain will start rattling new ideas.

  • And finally, I am going to be shopping for a new sofa soon. As if announcing it will somehow make it manifest before my eyes ~ magically.

Karen, you have to do it, machine applique is so fun, fast & easy. If I can do it anyone can. Love your friends' dresdan, probably because it's my favorite block.

Applique????? Running away screaming.... I love the Dresden Plate block, but will never get the hang of this applique thing. I'll be interested to hear how you get on with it.

While your materializing a new sofa, send one magically to me too. I have been looking for some time now and can find nothing I like as well as my old one, which has been re-sprung three times now and seriously needs reupholstery. The last time I had the guy come and repair the springs, he said - next time, you need to send this to the dump. Horrors - I love that couch!!!
The block wih the nine patches is interesting, I have not see that layout before. Did you materialize that in your creative self too? How big is it? Can I copy it???

Good Mornin'! You scared me for a minute - I frequently think about the fact that fabric is being printed RIGHT NOW! I'm surprsed that someone else is thinking the same thing! It's a never-ending battle for me - do I buy the wondrous fabric I see, or do I wait for the new wondrous fabric to come along?
Jack's Chain will come back bigger and better when you let it percolate in that fertile brain of yours.
A new couch? One that is scratch- and fur-proof? Is there such a thing? LOL!
I enjoy doing fusible applique, since I don't know how to do applique by hand - I'd rather cheat! That block is awesome!
    Happy Monday!

I can't wait to hear about your success with machine applique! I love applique but can't do much of it anymore -- I may just have to follow your lead and learn machine applique!

Susan's block is very nice. Don't be afraid of applique. There are so many ways to do it -- I'm sure there's one for you!

Lot's of Julie's too! I really love the quilt block, it is way pretty. New sofa? Yum! Ours are plain brown...sigh...brown...but dressed up with a few colorful pillows.

Ooooh I love that block! After you do some applique, teach me, ok?

A new sofa?! Cool. Do you enjoy sofa shopping more than grocery shopping?

LOVE that block! No wonder you're going to eat your words of swearing off applique. It is ad-or-able! LOVE the dots too.

Yes. Lots of Karen's...Julie's...Joyce's. Hardly any Darcie's. Especially with the *i* and *e* both. Usually it's a *y* or an *i* ending. Guess my parents wanted me to be unique, eh? (Little did they know.) ;-)

Dotted *i* and loopy *e* hugs....

Faye's comment is a crack-up! Susan's block is wonderful. Susan needs a blog. I want to visit! This is Susan from the closet, right? My mind read "Jack's Chain" as "Jackie Chan", and I somehow find that amusing. Don't ever let my brain interfere with reality- a worthless motto.

And another thing: the Karens out there are way out of proportion to the rest of us. I want to thank you for identifying which Karen you are when you e-mail me. I am tempted to reply that I do not accept email from unidentified Karens, but I like them too, so what am I to do?

That block is just so happy and sunny! I want one. I am also appli-phobic. One of these days I will take a class where some kind soul will give me an appli-pill and turn me into an appli-Patti. Until then, I will just admire from afar. BTW, I have been thinking about you and hoping that you are tolerating your meds. Gaze deep into that happy, sunny block and thinks happy, sunny thoughts.

I love applique of any kind! You'll be fine. I love that block! A new sofa? Happy Shopping! I hate furniture shopping!

Love the "Jack's Chain"!.......The machine applique sounds so fun! We learned at the last class we went to (Valerie and me), to "echo", which I had not heard of, where you just continue to stitch around the applique in several circles, etc. after it has been stitched on.. It was very interesting.

I sat up in bed and appliqued Dresden's plates onto the block last night.
I do it all in stages. Hey maybe I could do a tutorial Ha Ha....
    But I cut them.
I cut a piece of fabric 4" wide
I use the dresden wedge template to cut them, up one way down one way.
I fold them and pin across the top
I sew across the top (pointy tops this way) I chain piece
I then sit and cut the chain piecing.
I then sit and turn the tops inside out.
    I then press them
I them place them on the backing fabric so they are pleasing.
Then I keep them in order and sew them together.
Then I sew them on the backing.
I know I can do one without all the sit and do steps but when I am making a lot this works for me.
I am making a Christmas quilt for me bed. Dresden plates on cream with tiny gold spot.
